So this weekend I participated in a color run to help raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, which as you know is the fund established to help Ronald McDonald finally get off the streets. (I’m just kidding about that; if you want to know more, go to www.rmhc.org.) Now I think we can all agree that running is unbelievably boring. “What’s over that hill…wait for it…another five minutes…hold on, feel the burn…waaaaait for it…ooh, another hill! How unexpected!” So in an attempt to make running slightly less intolerable, the organizers of the color run decided to throw colored powder at people as they ran. And it worked – I ran three whole miles in 43-degree rain without once telling myself how stupid running is. And look at the results! I look like I fell into the vats at the Crayola plant.
Bottom line, it was awesome. I highly recommend participating in a color run. And in honor of my brief return to childhood, I have a few ideas this week that I think will make your working day a little more enjoyable. You can’t really fling colored paint at people in the cubicles across the hall, at least not without seriously irritating the janitors. But I think any one of these ideas should add a little fun to your day without hurting anyone.
Speak to Everyone in an Invented Foreign Language! I know people who have done this. They got bored one day and decided to entertain themselves while grocery shopping by pretending to speak Rothshoddian, the native language of the people from Rothenshad, a small country near Hungary. The ‘language’ basically consisted of making up weird sounds and pretending they meant something – I’m pretty sure ‘bloopaloo’ meant ‘apple’ – and it was their favorite trip to the grocery store ever. The looks you’ll get are totally worth the effort, and it won’t cost you a dime.
Fling Candy at People! Everyone loves candy, and the only thing that makes candy better is when it comes shooting at me across the room. You can accompany your candy cannon with phrases like, “You look nice today – have some candy!” or “Great job on that report – have some candy!” or “You look like you could use some nougat – have some candy!” Just make sure the candy is small. I did this once with caramel apples, and it didn’t go over so well.
So there you go. None of those things will cost you a dime (at least not if you steal the candy from somebody), and I promise it’ll make your day better. Plus you’ll have candy! Make sure you go to the gym later; or better yet, go find a color run to run in.
