Jeff, you forgot to mention the importance of keeping the introduction short...a third time. It's that important. So I will handle the third mention for you. SME Entertainment Group is the private events arm of Live Nation | Ticketmaster, booking headline entertainment and top keynote speakers - Jeff being one of our favorites! - for events globally. I have been with SME since 1992 and the best intro I have ever heard still belongs to comedy/magician Bill Herz:

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the world's greatest magician...in his price range...BILL HERZ!!!!"

Like with Jeff's intro, the audience is laughing before he even says a word.

The best introductions can launch a speaker and have the audience with them before they open their mouth. The worst introduction forces the speaker to dig themselves out of a ditch with hopes of connecting with the group. The best introduction I ever witnessed was at Boy's State with 200 high school boys (tough audience!) sitting on a grassy hillside. It was hot and the grass was itchy. The introducer, speaking from a flatbed trailer, started out so quiet that the boys had to lean in to hear. As he described the speaker he got louder and more enthusiastic. You couldn't help but feel the excitement. All 200 boys stood and gave the speaker a standing ovation. Afterward the speaker described it as being shot out of a cannon. They say that the best speaker is only as good as the worst microphone. To parallel that, the introducer should be chosen carefully as they can make or break a speaker.
